Home Cooking Inspired by Eat Pray Love

September 7, 2010 Leave a comment

Inspired by the recent release of Eat Pray Love featuring Julia Roberts, I went shopping at Whole Foods with Italian fare in mind.

(A quick summary of the movie: After a series of wrong relationships, the main character in the movie travels to Italy, India and Bali to find herself. In Italy, she learns to find passion in food. The movie highlights the simple fare of Italy, which reminds me of my travels there a decade ago. From my perspective, the food in Italy isn’t the best in the world. If you want that, France is a better country to visit. However, if you want a home-style and simple meal enjoyed by friends and family alike and savored into the long hours of the day and night with food and wine offerings (like in the movie), Italy provides that.)

So back to the Italian fare I’ve had right here at home in the US:

Prosciutto and melon
Rustic bread dipped in extra virgin olive oil, freshly grated parmesan cheese, and pepper flakes
Littleneck clams sauteed with lots of garlic, olive oil, white wine, sundried tomatoes, and onions

And… I still have homemade pasta in the pantry and will be adding simple marinara sauce and lots of that parmesan cheese to that for dinner tonight. Just add a glass of red wine and my dinner is complete!

Kitchen renovations done

December 2, 2008 Leave a comment

I’m so glad that our kitchen is finally done!!! I think it looks great although I still have some reservations about the colors we picked out.

Here’s our kitchen renovation timeline:

On Wednesday right before Turkey Day, our new granite countertops were installed.

On Thursday the morning of Turkey Day, the plumber came and installed the faucet.

On Friday, my husband and I went to the Great Indoors to purchase a light fixture for the kitchen and to Home Depot to pick out colors for a repaint. We decided on ocean pearl (glidden) which is the same color as our living room with a blueish grey (I’m not sure what the exact color is) as an accent color.

On Saturday, we had a contractor, Hugo, out to put in new drywall where the old blue backsplash used to be. He also worked on the ceilings, lighting and other things around the house.

On Monday, Hugo’s guys came back and painted. This is the finished product:

Granite countertops in transition

November 26, 2008 Leave a comment

Today, we’re having the granite countertops installed so I thought I’d post some pictures of the transition because they’re still in the process of prepping the counters and sink area. It’s looking really ugly. We decided to have the backsplash tiles taken out as well and probably won’t get those replaced next week. So we’ll be in transition for a little bit.

So much for everything being ready by Turkey Day 🙂

New granite countertops!

November 21, 2008 Leave a comment

As of today, my husband and I decided to install a beautiful granite countertop by next Wednesday right before Turkey Day! The granite we picked out comes from Brazil’s Amazon area and has huge specks of gold, brown black, green and silver. There’s definitely a storybook quality to the granite because your imagination can go wild creating ideas or stories about what images you see in the granite. At least that’s how I feel because I see a herd of horses and running rivers in the slabs of granite we picked out. It’s no wonder the name of the granite is Amazon Fantasy.

The GraniTech contractors are measuring our countertops today. In addition to the new granite countertops, we’re getting a brand new stainless steel sink, faucet and food disposal system. I think I’m going to miss our old porcelain ivory sink but it’s an overmounted sink and with the new countertops, it’ll be better to have an undermounted sink so the old one’ll have to go…. Oh well.

Currently, we’re anticipating that we’ll need a new backsplash too but we’re in no hurry to install that just yet. Eventually, we would like a stainless steel or natural stone backsplash.

I feel like our little country kitchen (pictured below) is really coming along! Soon, it’ll be nice and modern like the rest of the house. Yippee!
